Dinner At Luna Modern Mexican Cuisine

After some furniture shopping at Macy’s at Victoria Gardens, my husband and I decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Luna Modern Mexican Cuisine.

We were super tired and hungry so we decided to skip the appetizers and drinks and quickly ordered our main dishes from the menu.

Modern Mexican Food:

I tried the “Pepita crusted tilapia”.
The fish was coated in seeds and fried. It was fresh and flavorful but a little too oily. Part of my fish was also drenched in a red curry mango sauce which made the fish way too sweet. I wish they had served the sauce on the side. My dish also came with vegetables which were cooked perfectly and a small side of white rice that had a couple of tiny pieces of fried plantains. The plantain bits were sooo tasty!!!!

I asked my server for a hot sauce and she brought me their “habanero sauce”. I wanted to take that sauce home, it was that good!

My husband ordered the “Carne asada”.
His steak was served with guacamole, a cheese enchilada, and some beans. His meal looked gorgeous with splashes of chimichurri sauce.

He enjoyed the meat, thought the enchilada was just ok, but absolutely hated the side of beans. He said it was a bowl of watery tasteless mess. My husband is harder to please than I am ūüėČ

Service was amazing from beginning to end. Our server was efficient and attentive and answered all of our questions.

Super casual and laid back atmosphere. Lots of tables were filled with larger groups of friends and families and were conversing over drinks. They do have booths tucked away in a few corners if you are looking to enjoy a quiet or romantic meal.

Overall we enjoyed our dinner here and will be back to try more menu items. Would love to try out their Happy Hour.

Stopped By Paul Martin’s American Grill

Stopped by around 5:00 pm on a Saturday a couple of weeks ago and realized they have Happy Hour daily between 3:00 to 7:00. It’s only valid if you seat yourself in the bar area though. Luckily we were able to find seating right away.

Happy Hour Menu: They have some appetizers for $6 and $9. They have three entrees for $13. If you choose an entree, then you get a complimentary drink of your choice from the Happy Hour menu that’s $6 if ordered alone. I thought that deal was great!

Here is what we tried:

*Steak Frites, $13: Small steak served with garlic herb butter I think. It really needed some seasoning majorly, but it was cooked perfectly. Served with a generous portion of fries.

*Cheeseburger, $13: This was the star of our meal. Juicy and flavorful burger served with seasoned fries. Definitely order this.

*Beef tacos, $9: I really liked them. Husband thought they were just ok. Shredded flavorful beef in a warm corn tortilla with a few fixings. Two small tacos per serving.

There were a few other appetizers in the Happy Hour menu that sounded really appetizing. Will definitely be back to try them all! Overall the service was great from start to finish.

Floral Maxi Dress

A floral feminine wrap maxi dress is a perfect outfit for a date night.

I enjoy easy outfits which don’t require too much planning or coordination. For warm summer nights, I really like this¬†floral wrap dress by Wink Gal. It’s super romantic and girly, and the cut and design are very slimming. The V neck is pretty deep making it most appropriate for a romantic night out. It’s too low of a cut for me to wear it as is, so I wore it with a black camisole. If you’re in the market for a date night dress that makes you feel girly, go with this dress and you won’t have any regrets.

You can find this pretty floral maxi dress here on sale!

Also, its always a good idea to have ¬†a good stock pile of basics. Camisoles are my go to item for fixing all difficult to wear items. When I was purchasing this dress, I knew I wouldn’t have the courage to wear it as is due to the low neck line or else I’d give every one an unwanted show. I have a drawer full of tanks and camisoles to wear as undergarments and as night shirts, but my latest favorite discovery is by Jockey. Here is a link to buy these on sale.

Accessories: Below you can see how I wore this maxi dress. I kept the accessories to a minimum and out on gold and teal earrings which I purchased from Amazon for under $10.00. The heels I’m wearing are a bit of a splurge for me. I bought them earlier this year when they finally went on sale for under $100.00 on Amazon by Gwen Stefani.

Makeup: This is a very quick and simple look which involves minimum amount of products. Always starting with my favorite moisturizer¬†by Estee Lauder,¬†I put on a little foundation, setting powder, peachy blush, pink lipgloss, and lots of coats of mascara.By the way, if you are in the market for an amazing and inexpensive mascara, give this one a try: Essence I Love Extreme Crazy Volume Mascara¬†. You will absolutely thank me. Unfortunately the price i’m seeing on Amazon is quite high as it sells for $4.99 at Target! This mascara gives length and volume and the brush separates and coats all the eye lashes (even the tiny ones near the inner eye corners) really well. After my makeup was complete, I blew dry my hair and parted it to the side and considered it done. I like having freshly washed hair without product weighing it down or hairspray freezing it to a solid stiff hold from time to time.

This simple outfit with minimal makeup and accessories will have you ready and out the door in no time!

July 4th Outfit Of The Day

Hope everyone had a great July 4th! I love this holiday as it gives us a chance to get together with friends and family, BBQ food, spend some quality time and watch fireworks! We decided to watch them at Fairplex in Pomona. It was their 30th annual show and they seem to get better every year!

Summer Fashion: I never take living in Southern California for granted as we have pleasant weather all year round. Even in the middle of summer, our nights a comfortable cool 70 degrees. After a long day of cooking and mingling, I wanted to be comfortable while watching the fireworks. I chose to wear jeans, a worn-in tank top, and a kimono style cover-up.

Click here for great prices on comfortable and stylish Kimonos!

Boho Style Kimono: I absolutely love this versatile cover-up with a bohemian vibe. It’s comfortable and soft and is a great addition to your wardrobe as it can be worn all year round. The color is dark blue with beige flowers and it actually looks prettier in person. This top is a mix between a kimono and a shawl. It’s a one size fits all style that can actually fit women of all different shapes and sizes as the sleeves aren’t sewn in which is a great plus!On a side note, this would obviously be a great swimsuit cover up, but can definitely be worn outside the pool as well.

Celebrity Inspired Layered Necklaces: Find them ON SALE here!

Layered Necklaces: I like keeping my jewelry to ¬†a minimum so I generally only wear one or two pieces at most. I’ve been loving the Layered Necklace trend lately – it’s a great time saver to put on one necklace but get the effect of a few delicate mix and match type of pieces. To add to the hippie vibe to my own outfit, i wore a long layered gold and blue necklace which was very inexpensive on this site! I kept my hair natural with loose waves and curls which I quickly achieved with a 2″ barrel curling iron. I knew there would be a lot of walking so I opted for simple flats. We walked around the park while waiting for the Fireworks show to start and I remained comfortable and felt stylish enough for date night with my outfit choice.

What is Strobing? Strobing is the opposite of contouring Рthis hot technique lets you have fun highlighting parts of your face with shimmery glam! Think sheer illumination, not chunky glitter.

When strobing, you apply your favorite highlighting product where light would naturally hit your face such as your cheekbones, brow bones, the center of your forehead, down the center of your nose, and on your chin. Each face is different, and after some practice you’ll know what suits you best. Key thing to remember during application is have a gently and light hand, slightly sweeping the product versus rubbing it in vigorously.¬†This makeup trend is about healthy-looking skin so a ¬†sweep of a complimentary highlighting shade should still allow your natural skin to remain visible. I also love this trend especially for the hot summer months because it allows you to wear less makeup.¬†When you highlight your face first, the natural contours ¬†automatically come forward. This means that you can forgo heavy contouring and pseudo chiseling and bring on the angelic glows.

Celebrity Strobing At It’s Best:¬†Notice that in all celebrity examples below, strobing is done subtly and perfectly – no one looks like a disco ball!

Jenna Dewan Strobing

It is imperative to find and use the strobing shade based on your complexion that best complements your skin tone. According to Lijha Stewart who is the director of artistry and education for Makeup Forever, selecting the right shade “will ensure the skin looks bright and radiant, rather than too harsh or ashy and dull”. She suggests that individuals with fair skin tones should focus on white to pinky-beige highlights. Those with medium skin tones look best in bronzed beige to gold hues. Lastly, golds to peachy and orange shimmers stand out on dark skin tones.

How To: When strobing, per the experts at Cosmopolitan, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure you end up with a soft dewy finish versus an oily and shiny disco ball!

1. Prep your skin with a hydrating moisturizer. Here is my favorite one!

2. Use a highlighter shade that best matches your skin tone.

3. Only use the highlighter in spots that catch light.

4. After you’ve applied the highlighter, blend it out with your finger tips, a brush, or a makeup sponge.

5. If you have oily skin, opt for matte bronzer, blush, or other facial products, and only use a shimmery highlighter.

Now that we know how to “strobe”, I wanted to share a few of my favorite highlighters!

Best Highlighters

1. Mary-Lou Manizer – This luminizer by The Balm is a honey-hued luminizer that catches everybody‚Äôs eye. This product can be used as a highlighter, shadow and shimmer. It diffuses light so your skin looks softer and younger while adding a subtle glow – put a little or a lot, whatever you’re comfortable with!

2. Becca x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector¬ģ Pressed – CHAMPAGNE POP– This highlighter was a popular collaboration between Becca cosmetics and beauty blogger Jaclynn Hill. Its a¬†creamy powder luminizer that absorbs and reflects light for a superb natural glow. It is a¬†soft white gold w/ pinky peach undertones which is universally flattering.¬†

3. Benefit’s Watt’s Up -This cream-to-powder malleable formula is smooth and long-lasting, so it won’t wear away on a sweaty summer day or naturally oily complexions.

4.¬†Kevyn Aucoin The Celestial Skin Liquid Lighting –¬†This super long lasting thick gel-cream was formulated specifically to make your skin appear as if it’s been bathed in candlelight- its a subtle champagne color.

5. Laura Geller Beauty Baked Highlighter Portofino РThis mineral oil-free and  highlighter adds a gentle glow to skin, creating youthful luminosity allowing you to create dimension and brighten up your face with a lit-from-within glow.

Foolproof Quick Makeup Routine

Foolproof – Easy step by step directions to achieve a sultry look in no time!

Here are a few tips on how to achieve a simple yet sultry makeup look in minimum time. A good rule of thumb that I always try to follow is to choose one feature and use makeup to enhance it while keeping the rest of the face pretty minimal. In this example, I chose to play up my eyes – this doesn’t mean I neglected the rest of my face – rather I kept it natural.

Estee Lauder

Here are step by step directions on how I achieved this look:

First order of business- attend to your skin! If your skin is healthy, clean, and fresh- all your hard work with makeup application will pay off by not allowing your skin to look cakey and dull. Wash you face and neck with a good facial cleaner. Here’s my all time favorite:¬†Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser

A good moisturizer comes next along with an eye cream to protect the delicate skin around our eyes. I’m a hardcore Estee Lauder fan, and have been using their skin care products for many years- Here’s my favorite go to face cream which perfectly moisturizes my combination skin and allows my makeup to go on smoothly –¬†Estee Lauder Daywear Advanced Multi-protection Anti-oxidant Creme SPF 15¬†.

A face primer comes next especially if you are planning to keep the makeup on for the entire day. After leaving the primer on for a few minutes to set, the foundation can be applied. There are many techniques to applying a foundation – some use their fingers, some a kabuki brush, and some prefer application through sponges such as the beauty blender. Do what works for your skin- key thing to keep in mind is to blend out the foundation so your skin can still breathe and show through. Here is my favorite foundation that I’ve been using religiously for about 5 years –¬†Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup . I love this product! Estee Lauder Double wear foundation stays on all day and gives you a flawless finish while allowing you to look fresh and looks natural. This foundation feels lightweight and comfortable and doesn’t smudge or rub off even in hot and humid weather. A little bit of concealer to brighten up the under eye, and you are ready to work with colors.

Now we are ready to play with makeup!

EyeBrows: To play up our eyes, we need to shape and define our eyebrows well. Here’s my go to product for grooming and filling in my eyebrows –¬†ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS – Dipbrow Pomade – Dark Brown.

Eyes: Feel free to apply your favorite darker shade color on the lids and then smoke it out towards the outer corners of your eye. I chose purple hues as I find that to be a universally flattering and easy to work with shade. This the product I used:¬†Sugarpill Cosmetics Pressed Eyeshadow, in Poison Plum. After shadow application, be sure to line your waterline with a black waterproof eyeliner and draw a winged line on top of your eyelid. I also lined my water line using a waterproof black eyeliner by Estee Lauder. Mascara and falsies (if time permits) are a must for this look as it’s all about the eyes! One of my recent favorite lashes are¬†House of Lashes Falsies in Iconic.

Milani Baked Blushes

Cheeks:I used¬†Milani Baked Blush in the color Luminoso for my blush.¬†It is a flushed peach color with an understated gold tone with a slight hint of shimmer. I’ve found this blush to be universally flattering on all skin tones and it has great staying power. When applied with a brush, it blends beautifully very quickly and buildable from sheer to vibrant. Hint: If you’ve always wanted to buy Nars Orgasm blush but don’t want to spend $28+ on a blush, this option is pretty close- slightly pinky peach with gold undertones!

Lips: I applied a liquid lipstick from Anastasia Beverly Hills first in a light pink shade since they have amazing staying power. Then i topped off my lips with a quick coat of chapstick to prevent dryness. This step wraps up this make-up looks and I guarantee anyone can follow these steps and successfully complete this look under 15 minutes! Since most products I mentioned are universally appealing, women of all shades and colors should feel comfortable trying them out!

Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty is a fictional Japanese character created by Sanrio. She’s a kind hearted English girl with a cat persona. She’s as tall as 5 apples stacked high together and likes to bake cookies. Her signature red bow on her left ear makes her as cute as a button. With age, I’m realizing my obsession with Hello Kitty is definitely increasing.

Products featuring Hello Kitty can be found everywhere.¬†Originally Sanrio seemed to have aimed at the pre-adolescent female market as Hello Kitty products ranged from dolls, stickers, greeting cards, teen clothes, accessories, school supplies and stationery. Hello Kitty later expanded to include products such as toasters, televisions, other home appliances, massagers, and computer equipment, targeting young adults as most of this merchandise is retailed at value prices. Hello Kitty’s products now are also targeting the high-end consumer. Sanrio partnered with Simmons Jewelry in 2005 and since then they have been producing jewelry and watches¬†consisting of diamonds, gemstones, semi-precious stones, 18K gold, Sterling silver, enamel and ceramic.¬†Many beautiful and affordable Hello Kitty jewels can be found on sale here: Hello Kitty Jewelry on Sale!¬†

The Junction – Casual Dining

Restaurant: The Junction

Address: 1 N. Indian Hill Blvd. #102-103 Claremont, CA 91711

About the restaurant: A casual restaurant with a trendy vibe. Limited alcohol menu serving only beer and wine. Menu is a mix of tapas style small bites and regular portion options influenced by Spanish and Asian cuisine – mostly Americanized Korean popular dishes.

My Thoughts:¬†I’d never go here on purpose or by choice again – everything was edible (if you’re really hungry) and forgettable.

We ordered a few different menu items – none of them tasted amazing, but they were eatable.
1. Stuffed dates and figs – Tasted really bad, but I don’t like blue cheese. My friend thought they were edible but not good. Presentation looked like sad roaches to me. Yuck.

2. Avocado mango salad – Probably the best tasting thing we ordered. However, it was simply sliced avocados, chopped mangoes, salad leaves, raisins, and a salty/watery dressing. Not something i can’t chop up at home. Better than meh.

3.Korean ¬†BBQ Tacos – bulgogi and kalbi – I couldn’t tell the difference between them – sweet and oily. Meh.¬†I asked for hot sauce on the side- that was good, super spicy and tangy.

4. Korean BBQ burger with fries – Didn’t even ask how I liked my burger cooked… sad overcooked beef slab. Fries were okay with ketchup. Ranch was gross ūüôĀ

Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow by Stila Cosmetics

stilla gold shadow

Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadows by Stila cosmetics are dazzling creamy eye shadows with a multidimensional metallic finish and unique texture. They are packed with textured sparkle to help you achieve a variety of effects, from a light shimmer to an opaque metallic finish. They can be purchased alone, or with a mini Stay All Day¬ģ Liquid Eye Primer and a mixing tray. The standard price for the shadow with primer combo is usually $32.00. Find them on sale here.

Though they come in numerous shades, after testing them and reading reviews from many others, I compiled a list of the most preferred and highly rated shades. I’ve also included a simple explanation describing each of the shades for those of you who may not have access to testers before making your purchase.

stilla kitten
Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow in “kitten”

Popular Magnificent Metals Shades:

  • Metallic Jade – golden emerald green
  • Metallic Violet – glistening violet shimmer
  • Metallic Lilac – soft lilac luster
  • Metallic Golden Pink – pink with golden shimmer
  • Metallic Rose Quartz – soft pink with silver sheen
  • Metallic Gilded Gold – golden bronze luster
  • Metallic Pixie Dust – irredescent white gold
  • Metallic Peach – soft peach shimmer

Stila and all beauty gurus suggest to always use the primer first before application to ensure long lasting staying power. The primer vial is tiny, so a little goes a long way.¬†I found the correct “suggested usage” from Stila’s website for reference:

  • Add two drops of eye primer to mixing tray.
  • Add a small dab of Magnificent Metals shadows to the mixing tray.
  • Swirl primer and shadow together.
  • Use the tip of your finger to gently press mixture onto center of lid.
  • For a bold, high-metallic finish, build intensity with additional layers.

stila model eye

After applying these metallic shadows both with the primer and without, I realized that primer makes them a bit more shiny and metallic, therefore more appropriate for a night-time look. If a softer and subtle sheen is desired, then there is no need for the primer to be used. Be sure to close the lid of your shadow tightly after use to prevent them from drying out. Overall, I love these eye shadows due to their versatility, unique texture, vibrant colours, and long lasting power.
